Albany High School was among the top 10 Class 2A schools in the state in vying for the University Interscholastic League Lone Star Cup for the 2017-18 school year.

Albany earned 42 points to tie for ninth place with six other schools this year.

Last year Albany earned 44 points and tied for ninth place, and in 2015-2016 tied for seventh place at 47 tallies.

This year the 2A division was won by Mason with 70 points, within three marks of the 72.67 Sundown earned to take the top spot in 2016-17, and 10 more than the 60 points required for Windthorst to win in 2015-16.

The UIL Lone Star Cup recognizes the top high schools in each of the six UIL classifications based on overall team achievement in a variety of UIL sanctioned competitions including state and area marching band, academics, one act play, and various sports contests.

Mason captured its first UIL Lone Star Cup victory with a school-record 70 points in Conference 2A. The Punchers earned points for the most match wins at state tennis, a state runner-up finish in one-act play, and as a state semifinalist in girls basketball. Mason’s girls cross country, football, boys basketball, academics, softball, and baseball teams also contributed points toward the victory.

Mason was third last year with 60 points.

The 2016-17 Lone Star Cup 2A title defender, Sundown, earned 67 points and second place this year.

The 206 schools that are included in the UIL 2A classification range in enrollment from 105 to 206 students, with the exception of two schools with 85 students each that both requested to be placed in 2A instead of 1A.

Albany had 147 students when the 2016-18 UIL realignment was drawn and 136 of the 2A schools had a larger enrollment, placing Albany in the lower third of 2A schools in student numbers.

Other schools placing in the top 10 in the cup challenge for the 2A division include 3. Grapeland – 60; 4. Crawford – 58; 5. Lindsay – 52; 5. (tie) Shiner – 52; 5. (tie) Thorndale – 52; 8. Muenster – 50; 9. Albany – 42; 9. (tie) De Leon – 42; 9. (tie) Mart – 42; 9. (tie) Martin’s Mill – 42; 9. (tie) Post – 42; 9. (tie) Refugio – 42; 9. (tie) Wooden – 42.

Albany placed ninth among schools the same size competing for the cup in 2013-2014, fourth in 2010-2011, and sixth in 2009-2010.
