In their last two warm-up meets before next week’s district tournament, Albany High School golfers have continued to improve and turned in some impressive results from a March 29 practice at Shady Oaks Golf Course in Baird.

AHS athletes also played at Shady Oaks the previous Tuesday.

The local boys team didn’t place as a team, but golf coach Tate Thompson was encouraged with their performance.

“There were four of our district opponents at this tournament, and we beat all of them,” said Thompson.

The coach was even more impressed after the rounds on Monday of this week.

“This was the district tournament for Baird, but they allowed us to mix in and play with them so that we could get another practice in before district next week,” said Thompson. “Not only did all of these kids shoot their personal best scores that day, but three of them finished in the top three spots overall.”

He added that as a team, the boys took 20 strokes off of their cumulative score from the previous week.

“This is encouraging when thinking about district and being able to advance to regional,” said the coach.

Round one of the district tournament for both boys and girls is Monday, April 5, with round two following on Wednesday, April 7. It will be played at Maxwell Municipal Golf Course in Abilene.

Scores from the two most recent practice meets are as follows:

Lute Wheeler 95, Ayden Balliew 101, Houston Heatly 102, London Fuentes 113, Taren Farmer 135. Team score 411. Boys medalists: Koy Cauble 120, Levi Askew 143.
