The Albany High School boys golf team finished third at the Hawley Golf Tournament last Wednesday, March 3, and several local golfers placed in the top 10 among the medalists.

Out of the 35 total competitors in the tournament, Houston Heatly placed fourth as an individual, while Lute Wheeler was right behind him in fifth.  Both athletes are freshmen.

“The boys are continuing to get better each week,” said golf coach Tate Thompson. “For some of them, this is the first time that they’ve played in tournaments.”

The four-member team recorded an overall score of 410.

“These guys are learning how to maintain their game a little better throughout the round, both physically and mentally,” said Thompson. “I believe that we can shave quite a few more strokes off of our team score and have a shot to get to regionals.”

Although there are several girls participating in the AHS golf program, Thompson said that they have not yet been able to compete in a tournament because of conflicts.

The boys are scheduled to play at Shady Oaks Golf Course in Baird on March 22 after spring break, while the girls team will be on the same course two days later on March 24.

Individual scores from the Hawley tourney are as follows:

Houston Heatly 91, Lute Wheeler 94, Ayden Balliew 99, London Fuentes 126 – Team total 410.

Individual medalists –Taren Farmer 134, Koy Cauble 146.
