AHS football players picked for post-season honors

Several Albany football players were selected for positions on the All-Big Country Football Super Team, as well as the Class 2A teams for the area.

Three local players were named to one of the Super Teams, which is comprised of players ranging from Class 1A through 6A. Seven players also were selected for Class 2A honors based on performance during the 2020 football season.

The annual awards are sponsored by the Abilene Reporter-News.

Senior defensive lineman Parker Henry was named to the Super Team’s first team, as well as first team for the 2A division. Parker finished the season with 96 tackles (45 solo), including 19 for losses. 3.5 sacks, eight pressures, five fumble recoveries, and two passes defended.

Senior Ryder Wilkins was honored with a second team slot on the offensive line on the Super Team, along with a first team pick for Class 2A. He graded at 96 percent with 18 pancakes.

Sophomore Coy Lefevre at defensive back received the final Super Team award with an honorable mention. ­Lefevre was picked for the first team in Class 2A for defensive back. The district newcomer of the year had 82 tackles (37 solo), including two for a loss, two interceptions and two pass break-ups.

Lefevre also was acknowledged with an honorable mention for Class 2A as a running back.

Three other Albany players were tapped for second team selections for Class 2A, including junior running back Jaheim Newton. He rushed for 1,202 yard including nine touchdowns on 136 carries and one fumble recovery. Newton also had 12 catches for 161 yards and one score.

Sophomore Cole Chapman was named to the Class 2A second team at the receiver position. He had 17 catches for 401 yards and six touchdowns.

Senior Wesley Estridge also was named to the Class 2A second team at defensive lineman. He was the district lineman of the year, totaling 74 tackles (27 solo), including 18 for a loss and 2.5 sacks.

Senior Barrett Beal received an honorable mention for the 2A team at the quarterback position.

The Lions won the district title with a 5-0 record, and advanced to the regional playoff in 2020, losing to Windthorst, 18-13, to finish the season with a 11-2 overall record.
