The eighth grade Cubs defeated Eastland 28-8 last week.

“The Cubs got another win with a great performance against a good Eastland team,” coach Richard Sullivan said. “From the first kickoff, our guys showed grit and determination despite being out-sized.”

Isaiah Carrillo recovered a fumble on Eastland’s first drive to set up a score. Albany scored on a 39-yard pass fromSamuel Rosas to Keatin Russell in the first quarter to get on the board. The conversion attempt failed.

London Fuentes scored on a three-yard run in the second to boost the lead to 12-0. The PAT failed.

Fuentes scored again in the third quarter on a 30-yard run. Caden Price scored on a run for the two-point play to bump the lead to 20-0.

Rosas got the final TD for the Cubs in the fourth on a 12-yard run. Fuentes then ran in the two-pointer to end the scoring at 28-8.

Offensive standouts named by the coach were Rosas at running back and Fuentes at quarterback. Carrillo and Price were tapped as defensive standouts.

The seventh grade game ended in a 6-6 tie against Eastland.

“The guys got themselves in a hole early in the game after Eastland returned an interception for a touchdown in the opening drive,” coach Ryder Peacock said. “Neither team found the end zone again until Adam Hill’s score in the third.”

Hill scored on a seven-yard run.

“Offensively, the Cubs were led by Hill on the ground, along with Lanxton Viertel,” the coach said. “We had a great team effort on defense, not allowing anything but that opening score by Eastland.”

Ayden Balliew picked off an interception late in the game to preserve the tie.

The coach said he was pleased with the way the team responded to a difficult opponent.

“We knew going in that it would be a tough battle,” Peacock said. “Our guys had to adjust to a fast-paced offensive scheme that we haven’t seen before. The offense did a good job of not panicking and keeping Eastland out of the end zone.”

The coach added that the Cubs’ offense had problems running the ball up the middle, but adjustments were made to get the ball to the outside more.
