8th grade girls win local one-day tournament

The Albany Junior High Lady Cubs Red team won the eighth grade division of the Albany Junior High Girls Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 8, during a busy stretch for the local teams.

The junior high teams played Abilene Christian on Thursday, Jan. 6, and Cisco on Monday, Jan. 11. The boys seventh and eighth grade teams will play in the Olney tournament on Saturday, Jan. 15, before the regular schedule resumes against Hawley on Monday, Jan. 17.

Red Girls

The Lady Cubs resumed play after the holiday break by beating Abilene Christian 45-9 at home. Albany led 30-2 at halftime.

Braylee Clark, Caroline Chapman, Mimi Ivy, and Amber Miramontes each scored eight points with Zayne Lefevre adding six. Alli McDaniel had three points, and Kaisley Bartee and Madison Parrott each scored two.

In the tournament, Albany defeated Cisco’s B team 33-9, Eastland 26-17, and Dublin 34-14. Lefevre scored a combined 23 points for the day to lead the team with Miramontes adding 19, Chapman 15, Clark 14, Ivy 10, Bartee six, McDaniel four, and Parrott two.

The winning streak was snapped with a 36-16 road loss against Cisco’s A team. Chapman had five points to lead Albany, and Bartee added three. Lefevre, Clark, Ivy, and Miramontes scored two points apiece.

White Girls

The White team began its week with a 26-9 win over Abilene Christian. Ashlyn Miller led Albany with eight points. Tatum Grady, Hattie Braly, and Charlee Hefner scored four points apiece with Brooke Richards and J’Cee Keen each scoring two.

The Lady Cubs went 1-2 in the seventh grade division of the tournament, losing 13-11 to Cisco’s B team and 23-12 to Eastland before beating Dublin 21-12.

Grady totaled 17 points for the day with Braly adding 13. Miller finished with eight points and Hefner scored six.

Albany finished the stretch with just five players available for a 52-5 loss to Cisco’s A team at Cisco. Braly scored four points, and Hefner scored one.

Eighth Grade Boys

The eighth grade Cubs went on the road to beat Abilene Christian 48-41.

“The Cubs came out on top after a rocky start,” coach David Fairchild said. “I thought Lane Helle played well in the paint on rebounds. Huffman Heatly, Cade Fairchild, and Brody Oliver had games offensively.”

Heatly finished with 20 points to lead Albany while Cade Fairchild had 11. Oliver added eight points, followed by Mason McCloy with six and Helle with three.

The Cubs defeated Cisco 31-21 at home on Monday. Heatly led the way with 19 point. Oliver scored five with Calhan Fairchild adding three. McCloy and Helle each scored two.

Seventh Grade Boys

The Cubs seventh grade team rallied to beat Abilene Christian 29-23. Zane Green scored 15 points to lead Albany. Wesley Gleitz had six points with Jack Nail adding four, Sam Vickers three, and Connor Smith one.

The Cubs lost 36-22 to Cisco at home. Green was the leading scorer with six points, followed by Colter Edgar with five, Nail with four, Gleitz with three, and Vickers and Smith with two apiece.

Boys B Team

Playing for the first time since before the Christmas holidays on Dec. 13 and just the third time this season, the Cubs B team lost 34-8 to Cisco on Monday. Gatlin Wills and Judson Rogers each scored three points, both hitting 3-pointers, with Rowdy New adding two points.
