The Cubs and Lady Cubs got in a round of basketball action on Monday against Cross Plains with mixed results.

The eighth girls also played in a tournament last week in Throckmorton, earning a pair of wins.

The junior high boys teams are hosting a two-day tournament on Thursday and Saturday involving 10 area schools.

The Cubs B team will play Thursday (today) at 7:00 p.m., with the remainder of the B team games, along with 7A and 8A games, on Saturday starting at 9:00 a.m. Seventh grade games will be played in the practice gym, with eighth graders playing in the main gym.

Both the boys and girls will play Stamford on Monday starting at 5:30 p.m. The girls will be on the road, while the boys will host the Pups.

Girls Results

The two girls teams split games at home on Monday against Cross Plains.

The 7A girls defeated Cross Plains 24-6.

“This was the first time we had seen a zone defense in a while,” coach Lauren Peacock said. “We were able to run our offense and our posts did a good job of staying strong down low.”

The coach said that the team also did well at rebounding.

“I kept telling them that the shots would come with time and to be patient,” the coach said. “This is a feisty group, and I am excited to see how they do in the Stamford tournament on Feb. 2.”

Scoring for the team on Monday were Callan Edgar 3, Robin Lucas 5, Brooklyn Abbate 2, Robyn Trail 1, Jaci Chapman 1, Maci Hatchett 2, and Kiana Roberson 10.

The eighth grade girls were edged out 28-26.

“We came up short by two points,” coach Ginger Norton said. “Cross Plains’ full-court press and defense was effective.”

Scoring were Brylee Moore 13, Presley Green 5, Gracie Price 4, Briley Tabor 2, and Haily Cox 2.

The eighth grade girls won two out of three games at the Throckmorton tournament.

Albany defeated Newcastle 40-26. Scoring were Moore 20, Cox 6, Tabor 5, Green 4, Chelsy Parsons 3, and Brooke Kayga 2.

The Lady Cubs also beat Baird 46-9 in the second game.

Scoring were Moore 34, Tabor 4, Green 2, Parsons 2, and Leddie Leech 2.

Albany lost in the last game to Throckmorton, 32-29. Scorers included Moore 16, Green 6, Parsons 4, Tabor 3, Price 2, and Ella Webb 2.

“We came up short in the championship game, but it was close throughout all quarters,” Norton said.

Moore and Tabor were both named to the all-tournament team.

Boys Results

The three boys teams made a clean sweep in Cross Plains on Monday.

The eighth grade boys beat the Buffs 35-26.

“We had to incorporate a couple of different defensive schemes to counter some of what Cross Plains does and to defend their best players,” coach Jimmy Fuentes said. “I thought the kids did a good job executing those.”

The coach commended the offense for managing the ball and being more disciplined.

Scoring for Albany were London Fuentes 7, Cole Chapman 20, Keatin Russell 2, Cameron Nelson 1, and Caden Price 5.

The seventh grade White team brought home a 22-11 win from Cross Plains.

“It was a big night for Tyler Waddell and J.J. Clark, both scoring in double digits,” coach David Fairchild said. “Jayden Lucas and Austin Sanchez played well on defense.”

Scoring were Waddell 10, Clark 10, and Brayden Watson 2.

The seventh grade Red also won, beating Cross Plains 43-18.

“It was a great offensive game with several players contributing,” Fairchild said. “Lute Wheeler had a good night on offense, along with several others.”

Scoring were Houston Heatly 6, Cason Fair-child 7, Cole Read 5, Wheeler 13, Adam Hill 8, and Lanxton Viertel 4.
