The eighth grade Albany Cubs football team sent the visiting Cross Plains junior high team home with a 24-8 loss last Thursday.

Both junior high teams will be in action this Thursday (today) in Haskell, starting at 4:00 p.m.

After stopping the Cross Plains offense early in the game, the Cubs scored on their second offensive play when Adam Hill raced 33 yards to the goal. Lanxton Viertel followed with a two-point run for an 8-0 lead.

Bryson Herring jumped on the ball on the ensuing kickoff, but the Cubs were unable to convert the  break into points.

However, the defense soon caused another Cross Plains fumble with Cole Read recovering the ball for the Cubs.

Quarterback Lute Wheeler connected with Hill in the end zone on a 15-yard play for the tally, then found Herring with the two-point pass to go ahead 16-0 at the half.

The Cubs scored again in the second half on a three-yard run by Viertel, which was set up by a long pass from Wheeler to Ayden Balliew. Viertel also took the two-point play in for a 24-8 win.

“We ran the ball well on offense,” coach Ryder Peacock said. “We did a good job of taking what the defense gave us and turning it into points. We used four different kids as receivers, which made us tough to defend against.”

The coach said the defense did a good job of stopping the visitors.

“We came up with some turnovers, but we also made adjustments to contain one of the better running backs we have faced this season.”
