Albany softball players earned recognition on the District 7-2A All-District team, which was announced this week following the elimination of the final district team from the playoffs.

Junior Caitlyn Holson was named the Offensive Player of the Year by the coaches for the district, while junior Aubrey Moon received the district’s Fighting Heart Award. Moon battled injuries throughout the season, still managing to compete in most of the games.

Sophomore Torie Fuentes was picked for second team All-District at the third base position.

The Lady Lions placed fourth in district, losing in the first round of the playoffs to Windthorst. Stamford was the lone district team to make it to the third round of the playoff, also losing to Windthorst.

“This year was a learning experience for us because we were such a young team,” coach Jimmy Fuentes said. “I’m proud of the few veteran players who were still able to receive district honors even though we were in fourth place.”

The Lady Lions advanced to the state semi-final game in Austin last year, but lost six starting seniors off the team. With no seniors this season, the Lady Lions were composed of mostly freshmen and sophomores, except for three juniors.

“District honors now give our underclassmen something to strive for in their high school careers,” the coach said. “It should be another motivating factor for them as they continue in our program.”
