By Sam Waller
The Albany Lions and Lady Lions track and field teams claimed 10 gold medals and advanced 24 entries comprising 17 athletes to area competition.
The District 10-2A meet was held Friday, April 8 at Cisco.
The Albany boys finished second in the team standings with 147 points, while the girls placed fourth with 71 points.
The top four finishers in each event at the district meet qualified for the area meet against qualifiers from District 9-2A scheduled for Thursday, April 14 (today), at Graham. The top four at area advance to the Region II-2A meet on Thursday, April 21 at Springtown.
At the district meet, Cole Chapman won three events – long jump, triple jump, and high jump – to lead the boys team, which had 11 athletes advance in 12 events.
Also winning first places for the boys were Tye Edgar in the pole vault, Adam Hill in the 110 hurdles, and Coy Lefevre in the 100. Hill also qualified in the 300 hurdles as well as running a relay leg. Lefevre ran on two qualifying relays.
“We got everybody through that I expected except for Brooks Neece,” boys coach Rod Britting said. “He had a rough day in the discus. He was disappointed, and I was disappointed for him.”
Ella Webb won both hurdles events and ran on a qualifying relay for the girls, which advanced six athletes in seven events. Sarah Cotter won the high jump, and Kiana Roberson won the discus in addition to qualifying in the shot put.
“I thought we did really well,” girls coach Ryder Peacock said. “We set a lot of personal bests, and at this point in the season you want to see the times dropping. That tells you that the girls are training hard.”
Among the other qualifiers for the boys team, Luke Ivy advanced in five events – long jump, triple jump and all three relays. Cason Fairchild also ran on all three relays.
Others extending their seasons were Lanxton Viertel in the discus, Luke Marshall and Jayden Lucas in the pole vault, and Samuel Rosas in the 800.
“Lanxton was a surprise for us and a good one,” Britting said. “The pole vaulters all advanced in really stiff competition. The long jump was loaded, and the triple jump was competitive.”
The Lions advanced all three relay teams. The 400 and 800 relays both finished second with the 1600 relay finishing third. Fairchild, Ivy, and Lefevre ran on both the 400 and 800. London Fuentes anchored the 400, but had to pull out of the other relays because of injury. Edgar filled in on the 800. The 1600 lineup was Ivy, Rosas, Fairchild, and Hill.
“London’s probably going to be out for area,” Britting said. “Hopefully, we can get him back for regional.”
Other qualifiers for the Lady Lions were Briley Tabor in the pole vault and Avery Everitt in the 100 hurdles. The 800 relay of Kam Browning, Cotter, Webb, and Tabor finished fourth to advance.
“Going into area, we’re sitting in a pretty good spot with just about everybody that qualified,” Peacock said. “We should have a chance to advance to the next round. We are going to have to improve some times, but we’re going to keep working and hopefully get to where we need to be.”
In the junior varsity boys division, Albany placed fourth with 69 points. Jace Little won the pole vault and Jayce Tinkle won the 800. Tinkle also finished second in the 200, while Jonathan Coody was second in the 3200 and third in the 1600.Branson Beal finished second in the 100, and Hunter Vickers was second in the 400.
