Youth basketball teams get season underway

The fifth and sixth grade youth basketball players opened the 2019 season at home last Saturday, with three of the local teams splitting games and one team winning both of their bouts.

5th Grade Boys

The fifth grade boys came out playing good defense from the start, according to coach John Tom Heatly.

“We hadn’t had a whole lot of practice, so I was extremely proud of them, and can’t say enough about the defense,” Heatly said. “They also did a great job sharing the ball with each other on offense. The entire team played well.”

The fifth graders won their first game against Eula 38-3.

“We got a little sloppy and had some turnovers in the second game,” the coach said. “I think the boys got a little tired, but they pulled it out. I was really pleased with the hustle and effort shown by the entire team.”

They defeated Clyde 15-9, to start the season 2-0.

5th Grade Girls

According to coach Clint Chapman, the fifth grade girls lost their first match-up 0-11 to Jim Ned’s #1 team.

The girls bounced right back to win 14-8 over Jim Ned’s #2 team.

6th Grade Girls

The sixth grade girls won 26-2 over Baird, and then lost 28-2 to Jim Ned’s #2 sixth grade girls team, according to coach Leslie Neve.

6th Grade Boys

Stamford defeated the local sixth grade boys 55-10 in their first game.

Coach Campbell Terry said the boys played better defense in their second game, preventing Jim Ned #2 from scoring many baskets. Albany won 9-6.
