The Albany Girls Softball Association is ready to kick off the season and will hold a ‘Field Day’ at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 13 at Webb Park on the Albany softball field.

Registration

Jacey Shack, president of AGSA, said registration has been extended through Saturday.

“Because of the weather and other issues, some kids didn’t get a form to sign up,” said Shack. “We decided to extend registration to give everyone who wants to play a chance to sign up.”

Registration fees are $50 for the first player in a family. If there are two players, the cost will be $75. Scholarships are available.

“If you paid a registration fee last year and didn’t get a refund, you will not have to pay this year,” said Shack. “With COVID, we had to put the season on hold, and we know there are players who did not get their refund, so they will not be expected to pay again.”

Field Day Details

Shack also said this will be an opportunity for the girls to show off their softball strengths.

“The girls will get a chance to show their skills in fielding, batting, and pitching,” Shack said.

A parent meeting and a team meeting will also be held during the Field Day.

Currently, enough girls have signed up to form one under-8 division and one under-10 division.

“We are hoping we get enough girls to sign up to form two separate teams in the under-12 division and under-14 division,” said Shack.

Matt Stapp will coach the under-8 team and Shack will coach the under-10 team.

Game Plans

Local teams will play squads from Breckenridge, Eastland, Cisco, Anson, Haskell, and Stamford.

Shack said league organizers are still working out details regarding concession stands at the Albany games.

Umpires Needed

Shack said the directors are looking for umpires for the upcoming season.

“Sponsorships are available to cover fees, and we are planning on holding a clinic to help train the local umpires,” said Shack. “Umpires get paid for the games, and we’ve gotten permission to give credit hours to National Honor Society members who umpire games.”

Anybody who is interested in becoming an umpire or who needs more information about the league can contact Shack at 325-762-0006.
