Two Moran High School students will move on to regional UIL academic competition after placing in the top three at the district UIL competition last week in Eula.
Ellis Hise placed first in ready writing out of 12 contestants. He also competed in mathematics.
Ezekiel Henson was second in social studies and was entered in spelling as well.
The two MHS students will travel to San Angelo for the regional contest April 25-26.
Upcoming Events
Moran ISD will be STAAR testing for the next three weeks, with the specific schedule to be distributed to parents this week.
On Wednesday, April 9, representatives from Cisco College will be on campus to assist parents and students in completing the FAFSA applications, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium. All seniors need to complete the application to meet graduation requirements, along with all sophomores and juniors who wish to participate in dual credit classes.
FFA News
During the past week, Moran FFA members attended three contests, a stock show, and hosted Texas FFA state officers.
Bradee Stautzenberger showed her heifer in Austin March 27.
On March 25, Moran FFA sent its horse and vet science teams to Cisco College CDE Contest. The horse team of Sam Stanley, Rayni Vinson, Miguel Rodriguez, Christian Rodriguez, and Rob Williams and the vet science team, Jayla Bussell, Chase Murk, and Audri Ortega, continue to improve their scores, said FFA adviser Robert Stanley.
Texas FFA state president Hunter Lawson of Paradise and one of his vice-presidents, Brady Lambert of College Station, were on campus March 29 talking with local chapter members and other Moran students.
Two Moran FFA teams attended the West Texas A&M CDE Contest March 28 in Canyon. Miguel Rodriguez and Christian Rodriguez were joined by Ortega and Rob Williams for horse judging. They improved their scores and then competed the next day in Clarendon College CDE Contest.
A meat judging team of Sam Stanley, Ellis Hise, Rayni Vinson, and James Hise placed 16th of Texas schools at the WT contest. The next day they were 11th of the Texas schools at the Clarendon contest. These two contests had teams from New Mexico and Oklahoma in competition.
This week, teams are entered in CDE contests at Weatherford College, Water Valley, San Angelo, and Lubbock. The forage team is competing in an online contest this week as well.
Sports Report
Several MHS athletes qualified for the area track meet held at Eula on Monday, including Ellis Hise in discus, the girls sprint relay, Khloe Red Bear in 100 hurdles, Kieler Carr in 800, and Chelsea Thurman in shot put.
“I was extremely proud of the kids and their performances,” coach John Hughes said. “We got eight kids to the area meet.”
The boys finished sixth in the team standings with 13 pts., and the girls were fifth in the team standings with 27.
The athletes will return to Eula on April 7 for the area competition.

Junior High District
Both junior high teams finished sixth overall at the district meet last week, the boys with 45 points and the girls with 22.
“The kids competed well, and we scored the most points in a junior high meet since I have been here,” Hughes said.
He thanked coaches Matt Hise, Brad Stautzenberger, and Braden Hughes for helping navigate a successful junior high track season.
