School’s

Coming!

If you ask the question, “Are you excited about school starting,” you may get some different answers. The answers range from “I can’t wait” to “I hate school.”

That second one bothers me.

I remember elementary as being really great. I moved here in my fourth grade year. The elementary school was practically brand new and very modern. The beginning of a school year was always exciting.

You usually got maybe a couple of new dresses and a new pair of school shoes (that had to last the entire year).

In those first days of school, you brought your required supplies and you brought them in your new book satchel (not a backpack). We were issued all of the books we would need for class. We were also issued book covers for each book. We were always told that we were responsible for those books all year (a good lesson in responsibility).

In those beginning years, we all learned to read about Dick, Jane, little sister Sally, and their pets Spot and Puff. What fun that was. Moving on, we learned to write (in cursive). We now really had a signature. It was awesome (although that was not a word we used back then).

As we moved on to high school, we were taught by some of the best teachers ever. There were very few absences; nobody wanted to miss anything. I hope all kids learn to love school and the other kids around them.
