You, me & everyday life

What did we do before cell phones?

Well, that’s an easy question to answer. Most of us carried on conversations talking face to face. Imagine that!

Sometimes we would even visit  over the backyard fence. WOW! When was the last time you did that?

Back in the “olden days,” we did have telephones, which would probably now be called “antiques.” They were basically all black, and you dialed the number you wanted.

That eventually changed to colored phones, princess phones, and push buttons. We thought we were really uptown. Our prefix for Albany was PO (Short for Porter) + 2 + four numbers.

There were some “Party Lines,” which usually were phones used by the people who lived in the country. Three or four families might use the same line. (I’m sure no one ever listened in...shhh)

I do have a cell phone, but I don’t think of it as my “life line.” I don’t have a panic attack if I can’t find it. I simply pick up my land line and call my cell phone.

Usually it’s somewhere in the couch.

I use it to make calls, take calls, text, and take pictures of my 10 grandchildren.

That’s about all. I will admit that it does make me feel a little more secure while I’m driving on a long trip. But then again, we have all driven miles without a cell phone, and we all survived.

I do wish our younger generation would learn how to talk and carry on conversations with each other, face to face. They have no idea of what they are missing.

Try giving your cell phone a vacation on Spring Break.
