Old Jail to host gift workshops all next week

The Christmas season is in full swing at the Old Jail Art Center, and special activities for December include the free holiday marionette shows that were offered earlier this week, and a low cost gift making workshop next week.

Gift Make and Take

The OJAC will host a Drop-in Holiday Gift Workshop every day next week, Tuesday through Saturday. (The museum is not open on Mondays).

“Come and go in a festive atmosphere and make a variety of affordable, creative, and modern handmade gifts you would actually want to receive,” invited education director Erin Whitmore. “Pay only for the projects you make. Everyone is invited to attend.”

The projects vary in price, from $1 to $10 per item, and all the supplies and tools are provided, along with helpful instructions.

“No craft or art experience is needed,” said Whitmore. “We will teach you and provide you with all the materials that you need!”

The drop-in workshops will be available from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. every day from Tuesday, Dec. 11 through Saturday, Dec. 15.

Light refreshments will be provided. A free wrapping station will also be available.

Puppet Shows

Charlie Rose and Dan Peeler, master puppeteers from Peeler-Rose Productions, presented their annual holiday marionette shows at the Old Jail Art Center on Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 4-5.

“They are both here this year, and we have had a lot of school children come to the shows,” said OJAC employee Tatum Green on Tuesday afternoon. “There have also been a few people from the community who have come to the shows.”

This is the 33rd year that the Old Jail has hosted the puppet shows and has invited everyone, no matter their age, to come to the museum and enjoy the free performances.

“Beloved artists Dan Peeler and Charlie Rose always present a lovely repertoire of puppet performances to Christmas classics,” said Whitmore.

School children from Nancy Smith Elementary School and from the Moran Independent School District were among the audience members earlier this week.
