Malcolm “Bud” Leech
Malcolm “Bud” Leech, 81 of Albany, passed away Monday, February 24, 2025. Funeral services will be held at 10am, Thursday, February 27th at Albany Church of Christ with Brian Cope officiating. Interment will follow in the Albany Cemetery under the direction of Morehart Mortuary. Visitation will be held from 5pm to 6:30pm, Wednesday, February 26th at Morehart Mortuary of Albany.
Malcolm Glenn Leech was born September 15, 1943 in Shackelford County to Rush Duncan Leech and Anna Lea Childers Leech. At a young age, his grandpa started calling him Bud and the nickname stuck. Bud grew up in Albany and graduated from Albany High School in 1962. When he was a child, Bud’s family took care of the first longhorn cattle at Fort Griffin. When he was 12, the old cowboys took Bud to work with them and eventually Bud knew everywhere on the ranch. While in school, Bud was a part of the 1961 and 1962 State Championship football teams. He furthered his education and football career at Texas Tech University. While in Lubbock, he married Gayla Townsend in 1966. Bud graduated from Texas Tech with degree in animal husbandry in 1968. Following graduation, Bud worked as a state meat inspector for a few years. Bud eventually came back to ranching where he worked for the Green Ranch and Matthews Ranch for many years. He was also on the board for the Fort Griffin Fandangle, where he served as a past president, and was on the first ranch rodeo team in Abilene. He was preceded in death by his parents, Duncan & Anna Leech; one sister, Sonona Teinert; one niece Mary Atwell.
Bud is survived by his wife of 59 years, Gayla Leech of Albany; two children, Kristy Goen & husband Randy of Olton, Shannon Leech of Hurst; one sister, Sylvia Atwell of Tuscola; three grandchildren, Brooke Streun and husband Jordan, Breanna Goen, Bryson Goen; three great grandchildren, Clara Streun, James Streun and Hazel Streun.
