JUDY WOOD

Judith Dorine Wood, 80, of Albany passed away peacefully Jan. 23, 2022 in Anson surrounded by her loving family. Judy was born May 24, 1941 in Benton, IL to parents George Leonard “Cocky” and Joan Wood. The family moved to Texas when she was five years old, and she often said “she got to Texas as quick as she could!”

Judy grew up in Albany and graduated in 1959 from Albany High School where she was an accomplished clarinet player. She loved Albany and lived there for most of her life. She worked as a long distance operator and a grocery store cashier and office manager, but her greatest joy came from being a mom to her three daughters, Lori, Laci, and Tammy, and she will be remembered as their biggest cheerleader.

Judy proudly served as Justice of the Peace of Shackelford County for 18 and a half years, from 1988 to 2006, a position also held by her father from 1960 to 1978 and by her mother from 1978 to 1988. Judy was known to be a fair and impartial judge but also very kind and compassionate, except when it came to her daughters...all three knew not to get into any trouble in Shackelford County – there would have been NO kindness and definitely NO compassion.

After Judy retired in 2006, she spent much of her time traveling between her daughters’ homes “wherever she was needed most.” She thoroughly enjoyed being a Maudie and MoMo to her five precious grandchildren and often could be found cheering them on at basketball games, stock shows, soccer games, cross country meets, marching band competitions, baseball games, and band concerts.

Some words used to describe Judy are sweet, strong, honorable, and special.

She was predeceased by her parents, her sister Cindy Wood Hayes, and her brother Jay Wood.

Judy will forever be missed by daughters Lori Curtis of Copperas Cove, Laci (Tommy) Clift of Anson, and Tammy (Aaron) Morley of Saginaw, grandchildren Kacie Curtis (Jamie Sterba) of Copperas Cove, Jaci(Austin) Baccus of Lubbock, Kelsey Tischler (Antonio Castillo) of Lubbock, Jackson Pigott of Saginaw, and Forest Tischler of Anson.

She is also survived by nephews Kris Wood and son Ryot of Dallas, and Kasey (Kelly) Wood and children Madison Cindy and Oliver of Goldthwaite, and by her beloved brother Jim Wood and family.

Visitation was held Tuesday, Jan. 25 at The Whitney Theatre in Albany followed by a graveside service at 1:30 p.m. at the Albany Cemetery with dear friend and former colleague County Judge Bob Skelton officiating. Pallbearers were Tommy Clift, Aaron Morley, Jackson Pigott, Forest Tischler, Kris Wood, and Kasey Wood.

The family would like to thank the staff at Anson General Hospital for the exceptional care Judy received in her final days, care that was graciously extended to her loved ones. Girdner Funeral Home, Abilene handled arrangements. PD
