JACKIE MITCHELL
Jackie Mitchell, age 76 of Albany, passed away Monday, Oct. 5, 2020.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Albany Cemetery Pavilion, officiated by Stewart McWilliams, son-in-law of Jackie and Carolyn.
Jackie’s wishes were to be cremated. There will be a gathering time afterwards at MMPC Fellowship Hall.
Jackie Lynn Mitchell was born April 20, 1944 in Long Beach, CA to Elvy and Hazel Mitchell. He married his high school sweetheart Carolyn June Maxwell on June 1, 1963 in Albany. They then moved to Odessa, TX in 1964. He was a loving son, brother, husband, dad, uncle, Papa and friend. He will be remembered by many for his kindness, gentleness, and quick wit.
He was preceded by his parents, Elvy and Hazel Mitchell; brother Monte Mitchell; and son Douglas Lynn Mitchell.
Jackie is survived by his wife, Carolyn Mitchell of Albany; two daughters and son-in-laws, Stacy and Thom Phelps of San Antonio, TX and Kristi and Stewart McWilliams of Colorado Springs,CO; sister, Treby (Kent) Beck of Tuscola, TX; sister-in-law Sheri Mitchell of Mineola, TX; four grandchildren, Toni (Colin) Schexnyder of San Antonio, Brady Phelps of San Antonio, Kami McWilliams of Abilene, and Kaleb McWilliams of Abilene. Also many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Jackie worked in the oilfield in Odessa for Bethlehem Steel and Albritton Machine. He loved his work and the many great men he met and called on over the years. He happily retired in February 2010. He moved back to Albany in 2011 and really enjoyed reconnecting with friends and making new ones.
Jackie grew up in Albany and graduated in 1962 where he played on two State Championship teams. He loved to tell his football stories to his family and reminisce with his buddies! He loved all genres of music up until the very end. He also loved old cars and could tell you the make and year as it drove by.
Jackie was a member of Matthews Memorial Presbyterian Church and served on the board. While in Odessa, he was a member of Temple Baptist Church where he and his wife were youth group leaders. He touched so many young people’s lives which has been evident in the messages that have been received over the last days.
A special thanks for the wonderful care from Solaris Hospice team. Shanna and Julia came in weekly to care for and love on Dad and brought a smile to his face every time! They were here with us in the end and gave great support for all.
