DWI arrest follows crash at historic Hereford sign

Albany’s well-known “Home of the Hereford” sign was knocked down early Saturday morning after a vehicle struck the structure, according to local authorities.

The crash occurred in the early morning hours, with Texas Department of Public Safety troopers responding to the scene.

A driver, identified through Shackelford County Jail records as Robert Wayne Leisher, was arrested at the scene on a charge of driving while intoxicated. Officials indicated the intoxication was believed to involve a substance other than alcohol.

Authorities reported that the vehicle left the roadway and collided with the sign, causing significant damage and knocking the structure to the ground. No other vehicles were involved, and no injuries were reported.

Leisher was transported to the Shackelford County Jail following the incident, where he remained in custody pending further proceedings.

City of Albany crews later assisted DPS in removing debris from the area and securing the site. Officials said the extent of the damage is still being assessed, and no timeline has yet been announced regarding repair or replacement of the sign.
