Lady Lions earn win over Munday
Albany Lady Lions varsity and junior varsity teams were active on the court last week, highlighted by a varsity win over Munday.
The Lady Lions lost Tuesday’s game 36-51 at Hawley. Details will be reported next week.
Albany varsity lost to Aspermont 63-23 on Dec. 9 and then beat Munday 55-49 on Friday, Dec. 12.
“We didn’t play well against Aspermont last week and came home with a loss,” said head basketball coach Ashlyn Bevel. “But we had a tough week of practice after that game, and the girls bounced back for a win against Munday on Friday.”
Bevel said that the Lady Lions played well offensively against Munday, with Zayne Lefevre recording a career high of 22 points that night.
Freshmen Keeley Britting and Tinley Hefner put in 13 points each.
“I’m very proud of the group for continuing to battle,” Bevel said.
Junior Varsity Games
The Albany JV defeated Aspermont 38-27.
“It had been awhile since we’ve played a JV game due to teams canceling games on us, so the girls were ready, to say the least,” coach Lauren Peacock said. “They played a great defensive game which led to our offensive success.”
Individual scorers were Kynlee Milligan 15; Hailey Gleitz 9; Avery Gleitz 2; Kenzee Roysdon 6; Sawyer Shoaf 8.
In the game against Munday, Albany JV won 44-22.
“It was a defensive start off the bat with only scoring 2 points and holding Munday to 4 points in the first quarter,” Peacock said. “We jumped into a full-court press and were able to get some steals and get things going for us offensively in the second quarter.”
The coach added that her team continues to hustle and outwork their opponents.
“Effort is something they always bring, and it’s easy to coach girls that work hard all the time,” Peacock said.
Individual scorers were Milligan 10; Haiden Niell 6; Hailey Gleitz 14; Avery Gleitz 3; Roysdon 2 points; Shoaf 9 points.
The JV game against Hawley on Tuesday was canceled due to low numbers.
The Lady Lions’ next game will be during Christmas break on Friday, Jan. 2, against Stamford.
