Lady Lions improve to 5-1 in district

The Albany Lady Lions improved to 5-1 in district play Tuesday night with a four-set victory over the Roscoe Lady Plowgirls, winning 25-16, 25-15, 18-25, 25-16. The win keeps the Lady Lions near the top of the district standings with only two matches remaining before postseason play begins.

Albany controlled much of the match, taking the first two sets decisively with strong play at the net and consistent serving before Roscoe battled back to take the third. The Lady Lions regained momentum in the fourth set, closing out the match in front of a lively home crowd at the Lions Den.

The game also marked the team’s annual Pink Out Night, which drew strong community support to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research and treatment. This year’s effort was dedicated to Bobbie Johnston Hutchison, a 2001 Albany graduate and former athlete who is currently undergoing treatment for stage 3 breast cancer.

The evening’s fundraising efforts were wide-reaching. Proceeds from the concession stand, t-shirt sales, and direct donations during the game totaled more than $900, while the Albany Athletic Booster Club presented an additional $1,300 donation raised through its sale of 160 Pink Out t-shirts. The combined efforts brought in over $2,200 to assist Hutchison and her family with medical expenses.

Adding to the evening’s spirit, Albany’s fifth- and sixth-grade students performed a “Jump for a Cure” jump rope routine between the JV and varsity matches.

The Lady Lions also picked up a non-district win over Abilene TLCA this past Saturday in Albany, sweeping in three sets, 25-12, 25-14, 25-23.

Albany now turns its attention to Hawley, where they will travel to face their district rival on Saturday. Hawley remains the only team to defeat the Lady Lions in district play this season. Albany will then close out the regular season on October 25 against Colorado City before entering the playoffs.

The JV Lady Lions have also continued their strong play, winning both of their recent matches in straight sets. Albany defeated Abilene TLCA 25-10, 25-15 on Saturday, followed by a 25-15, 25-15 victory over Roscoe on Tuesday night.
