Workouts continue across busy summer athletics schedule
Albany Junior/Senior High student-athletes remain active this summer with steady participation in conditioning programs and the conclusion of summer league competitions.
The boys’ summer conditioning program continues Monday through Thursday from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m., with an average of about 30 athletes showing up each morning.
“We’re still doing morning conditioning, but no sport-specific football yet,” head coach Denney Faith said. “We’ve got 7-on-7 going right now, and we’ll see when we start the rest.”
Girls’ workouts begin at 8:00 a.m. and also follow a Monday through Thursday schedule. Girls’ coach Lauren Peacock reported consistent attendance.
“We’ve been averaging about 25 to 28 girls every day,” Peacock said. “They’ve been working hard and showing up.”
Girls will take next week off for the July 4th holiday and return July 7-17. They will take a second break the week of July 21 while coaches attend coaching school.
Summer League
Wrap-Up
AYSA summer league action is concluding this week for several teams.
According to coach Ashlyn Bevel, the girls’ summer basketball league wrapped up earlier this week, while the junior high girls will compete Friday in the Winters Shootout.
“The junior high girls have made great progress this summer,” Bevel said. “They’ve worked hard and improved each week.”
On the volleyball side, coach M.J. Reneau confirmed the ninth-grade team will finish its summer league schedule Thursday.
Looking Ahead
The summer conditioning program is open to all incoming seventh through 12th grade athletes.
Boys’ workouts will continue until July 18, with coaches leaving for coaching school July 19. Girls will resume workouts July 28-31 following their break.
In addition, there will be extra volleyball sessions on July 7, 8, 14, 29, and 30, including an evening practice July 17.
Preseason practices for football, volleyball, and cross country are scheduled to begin Friday, Aug. 1 this year rather than the usual Monday start date.
Peacock encouraged continued participation as the summer winds down.
“There’s still time for athletes to show up and get stronger,” she said. “We want to finish the summer strong so we can start the school year ready to go.”
