Grease Worms Go Full Throttle

The Grease Worms are rolling out again—this time with the Rockies in sight and a fresh route mapped ahead.

Three familiar faces from Albany—Robert Snyder, Craig Winters, and Matt Birkla—are back behind the wheel of their 1965 Ford Country Sedan as they take part in the 2025 Buffalo Run Adventure Challenge, which kicks off today in Buffalo Gap. This year’s journey will send them north through Lubbock, Amarillo, Raton, Pueblo, and Colorado Springs before reaching Pike’s Peak—more than 14,000 feet above sea level. After that, the return trip will head south through Santa Fe, then east toward Santa Rosa, Clovis, Lubbock, and finally back to Buffalo Gap for the finish on Saturday, June 7.

The road rally-style event challenges teams to travel hundreds of miles in low-budget vehicles, completing quirky, creative tasks along the way—all while raising money for Camp Able, a nonprofit therapeutic riding center based in Buffalo Gap. Teams are encouraged to modify their vehicles for safety and reliability, but not for speed. The focus is fun, fundraising, and a bit of old-fashioned mischief.

Past checkpoints have included roadside karaoke, mock burials of “roadkill,” and other absurd antics judged on creativity rather than competition.

Team Grease Worms is once again taking part with a mission to entertain and support a worthy cause. Donations can be made directly through Venmo by scanning the team’s QR code and using the memo line “Team Grease Worms.” More about the camp can be found at www.camp-able.org.

The event wraps up Saturday evening with a street dance at the Buffalo Gap Old Settlers Grounds. The fundraiser will include a raffle, silent auction, and live music from Shane Terrell and the Stumblers, Della Rose, and Caleb Sutton and The High Stakes, running from 2:00 to 10:00 p.m.

Fans wanting to follow the ride can keep up with the Grease Worms’ journey in real time through the Buffalo Run Adventure Challenge Facebook page. The team plans to post regular updates, photos, and videos as they make their way to Colorado and back, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the fun—and occasional chaos—of life on the road. Whether it’s a roadside repair, a bizarre checkpoint challenge, or a scenic view from the wagon, the Facebook page will be the place to catch all the action and cheer the team on from home.
