Mixed doubles team takes top honors at AHS tourny

Mimi Ivy and Cade Fairchild topped the chart as mixed doubles champions last week at the Sharon Wartes Abilene High Tournament, defeating several “big school” JVs and “small school” varsity teams.

“Mimi and Cade obviously played very well again, and I’m also super proud of our consolation winners,” Reneau said. “They got a tough first draw but battled back to get the consolation trophy.”

The coach commented that the Abilene High tournament was rained out last year, and local players didn’t get that playing time.

“This tournament is spread out all over Abilene, but it’s worth it because of the quality of the matches,” Reneau said.

The Albany team was in Vernon on Tuesday, with those results to be reported next week. Reneau is trying to schedule something during the week of April 14, but as of press time, there is nothing on the calendar before the district tournament at Abilene’s Rose Park Tennis Center April 21-22.

Results from the Abilene High Tournament April 3 are as follows:

Boys Doubles

Casey Estridge and Slayten Kelly lost to Cooper 3-8, lost to Abilene High 5-8.

Jaxson Street and Woods Peterson lost to Christoval 5-8, def. Sweetwater 8-1, def. Abilene High 8-2, def. Brady 8-4, def. Christoval 8-3 to win consolation bracket.

Boys Singles

Aiden Vickers def. Olfen 8-3, def. Sweetwater 8-1, lost to Abilene High 3-8.

Braeten Street lost to Christoval 4-8, lost to Cooper 2-8.

Girls Doubles

Finlee Brown and Charli Trail lost to Hawley 6-8, def. Anson 8-2, def. Hawley 8-2, lost to Sweetwater 4-8.

Hattie Braly and Charlee Hefner lost to Olfen 2-8, def. Hawley 8-6, def. Abilene 8-5, def. Sweetwater 8-6 to win consolation bracket.

Mixed Doubles

Mimi Ivy and Cade Fairchild def. Clyde 8-0, def. Ballinger 8-5, def. Cooper 8-2, def. Cooper 8-6 for championship.

Abi Hale and Jake Hale def. Christoval 8-4, lost to Abilene High 6-8, def. Clyde 8-1.
