Commissioners reinstate burn ban, approve LEC grinder purchase
The Shackelford County Commissioners Court met Monday, March 10, addressing multiple county matters, including reinstating a burn ban and approving the purchase of a new sewage grinder for the Law Enforcement Center (LEC).
Burn Ban Reinstated
With high winds predicted throughout the week, commissioners voted to enact a burn ban effective immediately for the next two weeks, at which point it will be revisited. Judge John Viertel noted that while burn bans do not entirely prevent fires, they help reduce risk, particularly with dry conditions and strong winds expected in the area.
LEC Sewage Grinder Replacement Approved
Commissioners also approved the purchase of a new sewage grinder for the LEC after reports that the current unit was malfunctioning and causing clogs at the water plant. The approved $16,022 cost includes a $12,899 quote for the grinder itself and a $3,123 installation bid from Black Plumbing. The funds will come from the courthouse repair and maintenance budget as a one-time expense.
Additional County Business
County crews reported ongoing road maintenance efforts across Precincts 1 and 2, including road grading. Sheriff Ed Miller provided an update on a prisoner transfer to federal custody and noted ongoing court cases. County constable Xavier Perez noted he arranged for a grille guard installed on the contable vehicle at an estimated cost of $950. Commissioners also discussed plans for trimming pecan trees around the courthouse and adding irrigation to landscaped areas.
The next County Commissioners meeting will be held on March 24, 2025.
