Albany ISD school board approves new buses

The Albany ISD school board met last week to discuss key issues, including the purchase of new buses, facility improvements, and contract extensions for district employees.

Two New Buses

Approved

One of the primary topics was the need for new school buses to replace aging vehicles. The board approved the purchase of two 72-passenger Thomas buses, priced at $140,000 each, using foundation funds. The buses are expected to arrive by mid-March, sooner than anticipated.

Superintendent Daryl Stuard emphasized the urgency of replacing old buses due to ongoing maintenance issues and difficulty finding parts. Board members agreed, with one noting, “These kids are people’s most prized possessions, so do it right and be safe.”

Contract Extensions and Pay Discussions

The board approved contract extensions for several district employees, with the possibility of future pay increases to be determined based on the budget. Those approved for extensions were Ezra Chambers, Jenci Chambers, Erika Varela, Angelyn Faith and Leigh Lowe.

Superintendent Stuard also raised the issue of employee compensation, stating that some district staff members are underpaid and that their salaries would be reviewed as contract renewals approach.

Facility Needs and

Possible Bond

Stuard reported that an architect will visit the district this week to assess facility needs. Additionally, a meeting with a financial advisor is scheduled for March 19 to explore a potential bond issue for school improvements.

One concern raised was special education funding. The district did not fully utilize its state-allocated special education budget in 2024, creating the possibility of losing $17,000 in funding next year. To prevent this, the district is considering hiring additional special education staff.

Technology Updates: Red Rover Program

The district is looking to implement the Red Rover program, which automates substitute teacher assignments, reducing the need for manual scheduling. The system would notify substitutes via text or phone call, with the most preferred substitutes receiving first priority.

Other Updates

• The Kids Heart Challenge fundraiser has raised over $8,000 for the American Heart Association.

• Read Across America Day will be celebrated on February 28, with guest readers and Dr. Seuss-themed activities.

• The district is considering calendar changes, with discussions on whether to keep a five-day schedule or explore a four-day week in the future.

The board meeting concluded with updates on staff resignations and hiring needs, with efforts already underway to fill key positions for the upcoming school year.
