Proceeds awarded in local scholarships

The Albany Kiwanis Club raised approximately $10,000 for scholarships Friday, Oct. 20’ with its 16thannualJohnRoseand JimLawMemorialAlbany KiwanisCharityGolfTournament and Fajita Fiesta.

Team API shot a 55 to win the four-person scramble by a stroke over Team FFB. The top four teams were separated by just three shots with Team Spencer third at 57 and Clear Fork Bank fourth at 58.

The event, which was named in memory of two longtime Kiwanians who were active in local programs, raises money for scholarships awarded to graduatingAlbany seniors each year.

“We try to give out two to three scholarships a year depending on what we get out of the golf tournament,” Kiwanian Zach Maberry said. “The scholarships range from $1,500 to $2,000 apiece.”

This year’s tournament drew 15 teams divided into morning and afternoon flights. Maberry said the pace of play was almost too fast for organizers.

“Some of the morning groups wanted to come back for the drawings in the afternoon,” he said. “I told them to be back about 5:30 p.m. We were done by 4:30, so I was calling people to get them back there.”

Prizes included six boxes of golf balls and three drawings for $200 to be shared by a team.

Maberry said the event is as much a social gathering as a sporting event. Local residents were allowed to enjoy the Fajita Fiesta withouthavingtoenterthe scramble.

“We appreciate the support of the community and like to have folks come out and have lunch,” Maberry said. “It’s nice to see them support our efforts for what we do for the kids.”

In addition to the scholarships, the Kiwanis Club also supports organizations such as Ben Richey BoysRanch,AlbanyVolunteer Fire Department, and Shackelford County EMS.
