Nancy Smith Elementary continues to see great success this week.

Last Friday, Oct. 20 progressreportcardswere sent out online through the Ascender parent portal. Stayuptodateonyour child’s progress by visiting the parent portal found on the Albany ISD website.

This week students have participated in Red Ribbon Week, an event organized to educate students about staying drug free. Students across all grade levels are invited to participate in a poster contest outlining details tied to the event. Poster contestwinnerswillbeannounced later this week.

Tuesday, Oct. 31 is Halloween! No costumes will be allowed during the school day as we focus on academicsandthegrowth of each student. We encourage all students to stay safe and make good choices throughout the evening activities.

FallFestisjustaround the corner. On Saturday, Nov. 4, students and parents are invited to participate in Fall Fest located at the elementary campus. The Albany PTO is still looking for sponsors to help during the event. Pleasecalltheelementary front office if you are interested in supporting the event as a sponsor.

˚ COUNSELOR’SCORNER

Last year, Steve Hartman, CBS news correspondent, created a series called Kindness 101. This program shares stories built around themes of kindness and character and the people who’ve mastered both. Hartman and his kids teach the value of courage and not letting the fear of failure getinyourway.Herearea few stories from the video.

Gerald Hodges made his Arlington, Texas-Seguin High School swim team without even knowing how to swim. Gerald made this profound statement, “If I couldn’t handle not being good at something, then how could I consider myself a successful person?” By his senior year, he helped his team advance to the state meet.

Ninety-year-old Ed Bray of Oklahoma fought in World War II receiving two purple hearts and numerous other medals. He was able to navigate through life although he never learned to read. After his wife died, he no longer had his helper so Eddecidedthathewanted to learn to read at least one book before he died. After working with a college reading professor, he successfully read his first book, a biography of GeorgeWashington.Heis nowonasixth-gradereading level and is excited to read everything he can.
