Firemen present safety information

Members of the Albany VolunteerFireDepartment presented fire safety information to local school children on Tuesday, Oct. 17 as part of an annual safety and prevention initiative.

Several AVFD volunteers were at Nancy Smith Elementary School at teaching children the basicsoffirepreventionand what to do in case of a fire.

The students were then allowed to “tour” a couple of the department’s vehicles.

AVFD fire chief Joel Viertel said that in addition to talking about how to “stop, drop, and roll” and changing batteries in smoke detectors twice a year,hewantedstudentsto know who local firefighters are and what they look and sound like in bunker gear.

Prior to Tuesday’s presentation, volunteer firemen met to put together packets of information and gifts such as toy fire helmets for the students.
