Food show winners to advance
EightShackelfordCounty 4-Hers qualified for district competition Saturday, Oct. 21 with their efforts at the county food show held at Bethel Assembly.
Category winners advance to the District 7 contest, set for Thursday, Nov. 16 at Abilene.
Advancing in the junior age division were Truitt Burton (Appetizer), Dally Bezner (Main Dish), Daxton Lehew (Side Dish), and CameronBurton(Dessert). Also participating was Maggy Spraberry.
Qualifiers in the intermediate age group were Kimberly Howe (Appetizer), Emmie Hise (Main Dish), Willa Early (Side Dish), and Ellie Compton (Dessert). Carly Kreitler and James Hise were also entered.
“All the kids were extraordinarily impressive this year,” Shackelford County extension agent Kelsey Bell said. “We only had a few who did not advance, but those kids absolutely deservedto.Theyhad some of the highest scores of the day, but that’s how it works out sometimes.”
Bell said a wide variety of dishes were prepared by the entrants.
“One of the girls milled her own flour and made her own bread for a Philly cheesesteak sandwich,” Bell said.
Club Happenings
The Sewing Club met Sunday, Oct. 22 at Friendship Baptist Church.
“They had a good group considering the conflicts,” Bell said. “They had six or eight there, but we’ll probably have about twice that as we go along.”
In addition to a sewing project,attendeesdiscussed activities for this year.
“We’re thinking of doing Saturday clinics,” Bell said. “We haul those machines around, and we’d rather spend the time sewing instead of setting up.”
Earlierthisweek,4-Hers in the Commercial Steer project met with a veterinarian to discuss cattle health, while sheep and goat validation was held in both Albany and Moran.
OnMonday,Oct.31,club officers will visit a nursing home in Breckenridge.
