Trustees review status of Senate bills

Albany ISD trustees agreedatMonday’sboard meeting that a presentation last week about the dangers of Fentanyl apparently had a profound effect on many students who were present.

Several board members and administrators said they had heard from their children or others who talked about what the two Lubbock-area law enforcement officers had revealed during the assembly involving sixth grade through seniors.

Supt. Jonathan Scott said that Naloxone, a medication designed to rapidly reverse opioid overdose, is already being kept on both campuses as a part of the district’s updated wellness plan required by the state, and may be carried on local school buses as well.

Senate Bills

Scott outlined the school voucherbillcurrentlybeing considered in the Texas Senate and said that he held “little hope” that the billwouldbedefeated,butif itpasses,teacherpayraises “might have a chance.”

Several trustees voiced their opinions that a voucher system would ultimately hurt public education.

Other Business

•The final version of the 2022-2023 financial audit was approved with the addition of figures from the Community Foundation of Abilene regarding Albany ISD’s investments.

•The board approved the district’s Child Nutrition Manual, Business Procedures Manual, and the Elementary Campus Improvement Plan.

•A list of candidates for the School Health AdvisoryCouncil(SHAC) was approved.

•Scott said that a new gymscoreboardshouldbe in place this school year.
