July has been convention season for Moran FFA students and instructors.

Students attended the 95th annual Texas FFA state convention July 10-14 in Dallas.

This week, Moran superintendent Dr. John Denson and teachers Minnie Denson Bennett and Robert Stanley have been at the Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas, also held in Dallas.

At the FFA state convention, students Allen Hebel, Zech Henderson, Alyssa Allred, Ellis Hise, and Cotten Campbell received the Lone Star FFA Degree.

Campbell, Hebel, Hise and Caleb York also put in 16-hour days assisting at the FFA Rodeo, for which Denson served as the rough stock superintendent.

“They pushed calves, sorted calves, worked gates, kept the barrels up, carried goats, picked up hats, and helped in every way they could,” Denson said. “Moran FFA received more compliments over those few days from more people than I could imagine. People in the rodeo business, all day long were telling me how well Moran kids worked.”

Students also toured  Scottish Rite for Children Orthopedic Hospital.

“Students discovered opportunities for careers, opportunities for charity and giving,” Denson said. “They also learned about the history of the hospital, polio, dyslexia, and orthopedics.”

At the ATAT convention, Moran agriculture teachers received instruction on student certifications and writing grants. They also worked with other teachers from across the state and the TEA to plan activities for upcoming school year.

Denson gave a presentation on student participation in the Texas FFA Rodeo.

Denson, Stanley, and Matthew Hise received tenure awards from the association.

Getting Started

Moran ISD faces a busy week with the start of athletic practice and teacher in-service.

Football practice begins at 7:00 a.m. Monday, July 31, with volleyball practice commencing Tuesday, Aug. 1. Teacher in-service also starts Tuesday. Classes begin Monday, Aug. 7.

Students planning to participate in sports must have undergone a physical exam and have completed paperwork on file before being allowed to practice.

“Most of our kids already had their physicals,” Moran principal Jo Hise said. “The school takes care of that. Anyone needing one can pick up the paperwork at the front office.”

She said registration packets for new students are also available at the front office.
