Monument deadline extended
By Donnie A. Lucas
Names of veterans who are deceased are being sought to add to the veterans memorial markers located on the Shackelford County Courthouse square.
Anyone who has family or friends who were veterans and who have now passed on should contact Mary Kay O’Connor as soon as possible. O’Connor said she has heard from only one family about adding a name, and she is hoping that more will come in quickly so they can be added prior to Memorial Day on May 29.
“I have only received one name so far since we announced it. The engraver has to come from Eastland, and he really needs a few more names to make his trip worthwhile,” she said. “I had originally said the deadline was May 15, but if I get names by the middle of next week, I think we can still get them added in time for Memorial Day.”
Anyone who wishes to have a name listed should contact O’Connor at 325-660-2498. Proof of military service is required.
The cost of the engraving is $95 for each new listing. However, there is funding available if money is preventing someone from having a name added.
A Memorial Day service is planned for Monday, May 29 at the Aztec Theater, starting at 6:00 p.m.
