7th grade boys earn team title at district track meet

The Albany Cubs seventh grade boys won the team title at the District 10-2A junior high track meet Saturday, April 1 at Hamlin.

The seventh grade boys scored in 12 of 17 events to total 146½ points and edge Anson for the title. The Cubs won four events, including a 1-2-3 sweep in the high jump, and medaled in all three relays. In all, Albany posted 15 top-three finishes.

Event winners were Aiden Vickers in both the high jump and pole vault, Clay Chapman in the long jump, and Jakobi Roberson in the triple jump.

Other medals were won by Bennett Neece in the shot put and 100, Rush Kidd in the pole vault and 400, Roberson in the long jump and high jump, Graham Ceder in the discus, and Chapman in the high jump.

Albany was second in the 400 relay (Vickers, Chapman, Kidd, Neece) and 1600 relay (Chapman, Kidd, Vickers, Roberson). The 800 relay of Chapman, Roberson, Vickers, and Neece took third.

The eighth grade boys scored 83 points to finish fourth. Jack Nail won the 200 as Albany earned eight medals.

The 800 relay (Britton Farmer, Nail, Christian Hernandez, Wesley Gleitz) and 1600 relay (Gleitz, Farmer, Hernandez, Nail) both finished second. The 400 relay (Hernandez, Gleitz, Zane Green, Farmer) finished third.

Other bronze medals were earned by Gleitz in the shot put, Braxton Henry and Connor Smith in pole vault after a tie, and Green in the 100.

In the eighth grade girls division, Albany finished sixth with 48 points.

Zayne Lefevre won the long jump and the 400. Charlee Hefner was second in the 200. The 400 relay of Hattie Braly, Tatum Grady, Ashlyn Miller, and Brooke Richards also claimed silver, while Richards was fourth in the 100.

The seventh grade Lady Cubs scored 18 points to finish fifth in the team standings.

Cayla Green finished third in the 800 and fifth in the 1600, running her best times of the year in both. Zoey George was fourth in the shot put. Placing fifth were Finlee Brown in the 100 and the 400 relay of Madeline Stapp, Green, Aubrey White, and Brown.

Lady Cubs coach Ginger Norton said several athletes were close to adding points for both seventh and eighth grade teams. Four girls finished seventh and two more eighth in various events.

“They all worked hard during the season and improved each meet,” Norton said. “I wish them much fun and luck next year.”
