Jr. high teams struggle against Hawley

The Albany Junior High Cubs and Lady Cubs basketball teams faced a quick turnaround, playing Hawley on Thursday, Jan. 19 and Haskell on Monday, Jan. 23.

The junior high teams close out their seasons Monday, Jan. 30 against Stamford. The Lady Cubs will be at home with the boys teams on the road. Games start at 5:30 p.m.

Albany teams had a tough night against Hawley, winning just one of five games. The seventh grade boys won 29-15, while the eighth grade boys lost 37-15 and the combo team lost 13-5. In the girls games, the Red team lost 33-21 and the White team lost 18-16.

Against Haskell, the eighth grade boys lost 36-7. Results for the seventh grade and combo teams were not reported.

In the girls games at Haskell, the Red team lost 28-9 while the White team tied 27-27 in overtime.

Boys 8th Grade

Against Hawley, Albany fell behind 8-2 in the first quarter and never caught up. Wesley Gleitz scored five points to lead the Cubs. Other scorers were Connor Smith 4, Jack Nail 4, and Christian Hernandez 2.

Against Haskell, the Cubs fell behind 13-2 in the first quarter, Gleitz scored three points wit Nail and Hernandez each scoring two.

Boys 7th Grade

Against Hawley, the Cubs took an 11-4 lead in the first quarter and stayed in front the rest of the way. Scorers were Aiden Vickers 9, Graham Ceder 7, Jakobi Roberson 6, Bennett Neece 5, and Cash Edgar 2.

Boys Combo Team

Against Hawley, Albany trailed 8-0 at halftime before matching the Bearcats’ scoring output in the second half. Judson Rogers scored all five points for the Cubs.

Girls Red Team

At Hawley, the Lady Cubs trailed by a point after one quarter, but a 14-2 Hawley run in the second increased the deficit to 13 points at halftime. Scorers included Zayne Lefevre 8, Ashlyn Miller 5, Charlee Hefner 4, Tatum Grady 2, and Hattie Braly 2.

At Haskell, Albany trailed 4-3 after one quarter and 10-5 at halftime. Haskell pulled away with a 15-2 edge in the third quarter. Lefevre had 5, Grady 2, and Hefner 2.

Girls White Team

At Hawley, Albany’s comeback bid fell victim to foul trouble, finishing the game with only four players. Finlee Brown scored all 16 points.

At Haskell, Albany again ended with four players, but came back in the fourth to force overtime. Both teams scored three points in the extra period and the game was declared a tie.

Scorers were Brown 12, Charli Trail 7,  Kamryn Graham 6, and Tara Cauble 2.
