The Moran Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs basketball teams had a shorter week than expected last week.

After playing a doubleheader at Trent on Tuesday, Dec. 6, Moran was forced to withdraw from the Lueders-Avoca tournament over the weekend as a wave of sickness afflicted both teams.

“There’s not much you can do about being sick,” Moran athletic director and girls coach John Hughes said. “We did get a little work on the floor, some fundamental things and technique things we needed to work on. We did that mainly on Thursday.”

In the games that were played, the Lady Bulldogs beat Trent 32-25, while the boys lost 51-37. Both games were rematches from Thursday, Dec. 1 in the first round of the Moran Holiday Tournament.

On Tuesday, Dec. 13, Moran played a doubleheader at Rotan. Results will be reported next week.

Moran wraps up the fall portion of its schedule Friday, Dec. 16 with a doubleheader at Brookesmith. The girls game will tip off at 6:00 p.m., with the boys game to start at 7:30 p.m.

Both Moran teams will attend the Gordon tournament Tuesday-Wednesday, Dec. 27-28 in the first outing after Christmas. On Tuesday, Jan. 3, both teams will visit Olney in their final nondistrict games.

The Lady Bulldogs open the District 13-1A schedule at 6:00 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6 at Cross Plains. The boys open district play Friday, Jan. 13 at May.

Against Trent, the Lady Bulldogs (3-5) led 10-4 after first quarter and maintained their lead the rest of the way. Moran outscored Trent 22-21 over the last three quarters.

Alyssa Allred scored a game-high 20 points to lead Moran. Emily Murk added six points with Samantha Hinkle scoring four and Neveah Huskey two.

Details of the boys game were not available.

Junior High

On Monday, Dec. 5, the junior high teams combined to play Eula, falling 35-25. The Bulldogs fell behind 11-5 in the first quarter. Eula added to its lead with a 12-8 edge in the third, but Moran kept pace in the other two periods.

Garrett Hamilton led Moran with 13 points, while Landon Moreno scored 12.

On Monday, Dec. 12, the junior high teams played A and B games against Baird. The A team lost 35-26, while the B team, composed of all sixth graders, fell 38-6.

In the A game, Moran fell behind 10-5 in the first quarter and trailed 18-9 at halftime before posting a 10-7 edge in the third quarter.

Garrett Hamilton led all scorers with 15 points for Moran, while Landon Moreno scored nine points.  Maekayla Kersey, the lone girl playing junior high basketball at Moran, scored two points.

In the B game, Baird was in control all the way, leading 10-2 after the first quarter and 22-2 at halftime. Andy Barron led Moran with four points and Ricky Lee scored two.

The junior high teams are off through the holidays, returning to action Monday, Jan. 9 against Cross Plains at home.

Field Trip

Hughes said the Moran football team and cheerleaders were to be in attendance Wednesday, Dec. 14, for the Class 1A state championship games at Arlington’s AT&T Stadium. Benjamin, which will be Moran’s season opener next fall, played Loraine in the Division II game, followed by Westbrook against Abbott in Division I.

“We wanted our kids to see what the atmosphere is like at these games,” Hughes said.
