A new event for the Shackelford County Youth and Livestock Show is officially underway following initial weigh-in for commercial steers.

Shackelford County extension agent Kelsey Bell said five entries of two steers were weighed and registered on Sunday, Sept. 25 at the Nail Ranch.

“We’re pleased with that number for our first year,” Bell said. “The kids learned a lot. Bucky Nail gave a talk on his feeding management program.”

Entrants received weigh tickets as a starting place for their record books for the project.

“We’ll do a final weigh-in on Jan. 8 at the Nail to close out their record books,” Bell said. “That gives the kids time to finish their record books and turn them in so they can be judged.”

The county show will be held Jan. 19-21. The commercial steers will be judged on Friday, Jan. 20.

Horse Club Playday

More than a dozen Shackelford County 4-Hers took part in a playday on Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Sheriff’s Posse Arena at Baird.

“We had basic speed events – barrels, poles, stakes, and flags,” Bell said. “We had a dummy roping and a few little fun games with a costume contest for Halloween.”

Sewing Project

Members of the sewing club met Sunday, Oct. 9 at Friendship Baptist Church to make quilting blocks and headbands.

“We’re working on a quilt that will hopefully be finished in time to donate to Friendship Baptist’s Harvest Acres event,” Bell said. “Each girl is making a block, and then our leaders (Heather Nitschke and Jo Hise) will put the quilt together from the blocks.”

Upcoming Events

4-Hers Trevor Bellah and Ben Russell will conduct a woodworking project group under the leadership of Jim Nobles at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13 (today), at Nobles’ residence.

“They will go once a week through the school year,” Bell said.

The next Outdoor Education meeting will be 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18 at The Feed Store.

A STEM event is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 20. Time and location are to be determined, Bell said.
