Nearly 600 schoolchildren attended the School Day portion of Living History Days on Friday, Oct. 7, at Fort Griffin State Historic Site, down slightly from a year ago.

Site manager Mitch Baird said 593 students and 58 teachers attended to view the site and watch reenactors depict life on the frontier during the latter half of the 19th century.

“Public Day was a little bit slow,” Baird said. “We had a total of 89 people out, but over the two days, we had 740 people here, so that’s not too bad.”

Baird said the last two years have had solid attendance after the 2020 event was cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“Last year, we just went ahead and did the program and had a pretty average turnout, about 800 kids and teachers and others,” he said. “Now we’re just going along like we always have and don’t have any restrictions.”

Planning for next year’s event is already in the works. Living History Days is traditionally held Columbus Day weekend, the second weekend of October.
