The number of new COVID-19 cases reported last week stayed steady at four positive tests for the third consecutive week.

The weekly report by county judge Bob Skelton issued Tuesday reported four positive test results out of 21 tests administered at the two local clinics for the period of Sept. 19-23.

The use of home testing increased after tests were made readily available, making it unclear as to the actual number of local cases.

The number of cases requiring hospitalization in Trauma Service Area D, which includes Abilene area hospitals, fell slightly to 13 confirmed COVID-19 patients, compared to 16 the previous week. There were no patients requiring ICU care.

The latest cases are still thought to be the Omicron variant, which is reportedly more contagious than previous strains but has milder symptoms.

Testing continues to be available locally at the Shackelford County Health Clinic (325-762-3661) and ResourceCare Community Health Center (325-762-2447).

Anyone experiencing COVID-19 symptoms can make an appointment to be tested at one of the two testing sites in Albany.

Both clinics offer testing and vaccines, including boosters, by appointment.
