Stock show ‘tithe’ benefits ministry
By Sam Waller
4-Her Grace Fry quickly found a cause she could get behind after her family moved to Shackelford County.
The 13-year-old donated 10 percent of the proceeds she received last year from the sale of her show ewe to Closet Angels. The choice of charitable cause was unusual in that the ewe was exhibited and sold at the Kleberg-Kenedy County show in South Texas before the family’s move.
Dawn Fry, Grace’s mother, was drawn to the Closet Angels mission, as was Grace.
“Grace was very impressed by the setup Lori Reames has there, giving back to the community,” Dawn Fry said. “She felt that was a great way to spend her tithe from her animal.”
Grace, along with her older sister Faith and younger brother Cody, have ewes and wethers entered in the Shackelford County show later this month. And all three are expected to contribute part of the proceeds from the sale of those animals to charity.
“We’ve always encouraged all of the kids to find somewhere to tithe their 10 percent,” Dawn Fry said. “They each pick something; sometimes it’s the same place and sometimes not. It just depends on where their heart is.”
Grace, a seventh grader, Faith, a high school junior, and Cody, a fourth grader, are homeschooled. Grace is the only one who elected to contribute to a local cause this year. Faith’s contribution went to the Texas Brigades, while Cody’s went to the online streaming program “The Chosen.”
