Varsity girls basketball delayed, JV boys to start Nov. 20
By Sam Waller
The Albany Lions and Lady Lions basketball teams cancelled Tuesday games at Eula because of Albany’s involvement in the volleyball and football playoffs.
Also cancelled is Albany’s participation in the Randal Murry Classic in Seymour. The Lady Lions were originally to play all three days of the Nov. 18-20 tourney, but the varsity will now open their season when they host Guthrie at 6:00 p.m. Monday. Varsity and JV will visit Comanche on Tuesday before taking off for the Thanksgiving weekend.
The JV boys did not play their scheduled opener against Abilene TLCA and have moved their home game against Roby to 11:00 a.m. Saturday.
Varsity and JV boys are scheduled to visit Comanche on Tuesday; however, that will probably be adjusted.
Junior High
The Albany junior high boys and girls teams opened their seasons Monday, Nov. 15, against Abilene Christian.
The teams return to action Monday, Nov. 22, against Cisco. The girls will play at home and the boys will be on the road.
Boys 8th Grade
Albany opened its season with a 38-20 victory over Abilene Christian at home.
The Cubs opened up an 11-2 lead in the first quarter and increased the margin the rest of the way, outscoring Abilene Christian in every period.
“This was a good start overall to the season,” coach Ryder Peacock said. “I am excited to watch these guys as we continue throughout the year.”
Brody Oliver and Huffman Heatly each scored 10 points to lead Albany. Lane Helle added seven points with Cade Fairchild scoring five. Mason McCloy, Woods Peterson, and Gatlin Wills each scored two points.
"Offensively, I saw a lot of guys involved,” Peacock said. “They picked up right where they left off last season. Huffman and Brody both had big, big games offensively.”
Peacock said solid defense led to chances on offense.
“I thought the guys out front did a good job of playing the passing lanes and creating transition opportunities,” he said.
Boys 7th Grade
An Albany comeback attempt fell short as Abilene Christian held on to win 24-20.
“Overall, I was proud of their hustle,” Peacock said. “With our limited time on the floor thus far, we were able to make things happen with our hustle. I thought the guys got after it.”
Albany led 6-4 after the first quarter, but Abilene Christian scored 11 points in the second to lead 15-10 at halftime. The Cubs closed the gap to 18-17 at the end of the third.
Jack Nail scored 10 points with Zane Green adding eight. Wesley Gleitz scored two points.
Offensively, we did some good things,” Peacock said. “There are a lot of things we need to work on, and that’s probably the biggest thing we can take away from this game. It’s a great experience for these guys, but at the same time it gives me a chance to see what we need to do to get where we want to be.”
Peacock said the same was true for the Cubs’ defensive performance.
“A lot of the same things can be said, as we have areas we need to get better in,” he said.
Girls Red Team
Albany at least doubled Abilene Christian’s scoring output in each of the first three quarters to win 47-20.
The Lady Cubs led 13-5 at the end of the first quarter and increased that to 21-9 at halftime, then 34-12 in the third quarter.
Kaisley Bartee scored 14 points and Mimi Ivy had 12 to lead Albany. Braylee Clark added eight points, followed by Zayne Lefevre with six, Madison Parrott with four, Caroline Chapman with two, and Amber Miramontes with one.
“The girls started off slow and then found their groove,” coach Missy Dutchover said. “They did a good job running their offense and getting some easy scores.”
Girls White Team
The Lady Cubs had a strong defensive outing in defeating Abilene Christian 38-6.
Albany held ACS to two points or less in each quarter, using a 14-0 second quarter to take a 21-2 halftime lead.
“The girls played hard and worked well as a team,” Dutchover said. “They played aggressively and got some easy steals.”
Hattie Braly led Albany with 15 points, while Charlee Hefner added nine. Ashlyn Miller scored six points, Tatum Grady four, and Brooke Richards and J’Cee Keen two apiece.
