Schools compete to collect food
By Sam Waller
ResourceCare collected almost 7,000 cans of food to benefit food banks in Albany and Cross Plains through its Battle of the Schools Food Drive.
“It went better than we could have hoped for,” ResourceCare program assistant Ragan Riley said.
Students collected food throughout the month of October. Results were announced on Friday.
Albany students collected 1,330 cans. Brittani Lefevre’s fourth grade class collected 262 cans, the most of any class at either AISD campus.
Cross Plains students collected 5,694 cans to win the friendly competition.
“Cross Plains’ food bank feeds close to 58 families a month, so the food collected will be very beneficial,” Riley said. “The Cross Plains fourth grade class took their volunteering a step further and transported all the food collected at the elementary campus to the food bank and helped them unload and sort all the food.”
The Cross Plains first grade class collected 1,256 cans, followed the fifth grade with 1,174 and sixth grade with 1,043.
“We are looking forward to next year’s competition,” Riley said.
