Jr. high teams combine for win
By Sam Waller
The Albany Junior High Cubs football teams combined efforts last Thursday to finish off their season with a 42-0 victory against Cross Plains at Robeert Bail Memorial Stadium.
“What a great season for these young men, going 8-0,” eighth grade coach David Fairchild said. “We’re looking for big things down the road.”
Eighth grade quarterback Brody Oliver passed for two touchdowns, ran for a third, and completed three conversion passes.
Albany jumped out to a 22-0 lead in the first quarter. Calhan Fairchild started the scoring with a two-yard run and Lane Helle added the second score from a yard out. Breylon Billington then took a swing pass from Oliver six yards for the next score.
Oliver converted the last two TDs with passes to Calhan Fairchild and Mason McCloy.
In the second quarter, McCloy scored on a six-yard pass. Seventh grade quarterback Wesley Gleitz scored on a 19-yard run to give the Cubs a 34-0 halftime lead.
Oliver capped the scoring with a 65-yard run in the third quarter, connecting with Cade Fairchild for the conversion.
“All of our backs (Huffman Heatly, Calhan Fairchild, Helle, Shawn Keen, and Billington) ran hard,” David Fairchild said. “Brody did a great job controlling the game with some nice passes and runs.”
Albany finished with 345 total yards, while holding Cross Plains to minus 11.
“Defensively, it was a great team effort,” the coach said.
