The Moran Bulldogs concluded their portion of the District 9-1A Division II schedule last Friday with a 52-6 loss at Throckmorton.

“We played hard, but Throckmorton was just that much better,” Bulldogs coach John Hughes said.

Connor Hail rushed for 38 yards to lead the Bulldogs (1-7 overall, 1-3 district). Moran finished with 60 total yards in a game that ended at halftime.

Arren Hawley accounted for 16 yards rushing and caught two passes for 9 yards and a touchdown. Ellis Hise was 2 of 17 passing for 9 yards.

Hawley and Hail each recorded two tackles, while Tyler Waddell recovered a fumble.

Throckmorton (9-0, 3-0) led 30-6 at the end of the first quarter and added three more touchdowns in the second to invoke the 45-point rule.

Moran will wrap up its season at 7:00 p.m. Thursday with a nondistrict game against the Rochelle junior varsity at Mullin.

“We’re going to try to end on a good, positive note,” Hughes said. “We’ll try to start building for next year with what we’ve got.”

Volleyball

Moran closed out its season on Oct. 26 at home against Woodson.

The Lady Bulldogs lost to Woodson 18-25, 25-18, 19-25, 24-26. A Moran win would have forced a playoff with the Cowgirls for the final Class 1A playoff berth out of District 6-2A.

“All the girls worked really hard and did really well,” coach Jo Hise said. “The serves were spread out among a lot of them.”

Despite falling short of a playoff berth, Hise said the team made significant strides this season.

“We achieved self-confidence and the ability to overcome,” she said. “We had a lot of struggles. We set a rotation and got everybody comfortable in their positions. It took a lot of self-confidence for them to be able to play whatever position I had to put them in.”

Basketball

The Lady Bulldogs are scheduled to tip off the 2021-22 basketball season at 11:00 a.m. Nov. 13 at home against Strawn. Hughes said the schedule could change based on Strawn’s participation in the football and volleyball playoffs.

The boys team will begin play at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 19 at home against Woodson as part of a doubleheader with the girls team.
