The Albany Junior High Cubs recorded a pair of road victories last Thursday despite going in different directions.

The eighth grade Cubs won 34-0 at Hico, while the seventh grade won 22-21 at Abilene TLCA.

Both teams are off this week as the Albany programs take an open date. The teams return to action Oct. 28 at Santo.

Eighth Grade

Brody Oliver threw three touchdown passes and ran for a two-point conversion as the  Albany eighth grade improved to 7-0.

“I was very pleased offensively as well as defensively,” Coach David Fairchild said. “The kids played hard and gave a lot of effort.”

Oliver had scoring tosses of 15 yards to Cade Fairchild, 12 yards to Huffman Heatly, and 5 yards to Mason McCloy.

Breylon Billington had a 4-yard TD run and Oliver ran for the conversion to make it 14-0.

Heatly’s TD was set up by good kickoff coverage by Woods Peterson and Heatly, followed by a good defensive stand.

Calhan Fairchild recovered a fumble, then scored on a 5-yard run. Peterson added the conversion for the final score.

Seventh Grade

Colter Edgar caught the deciding conversion pass from Wesley Gleitz as the seventh grade Cubs rallied and held on for the victory.

“The guys had to face and deal with some adversity as they went on a fourth-quarter drive to win the game,” coach Ryder Peacock said. “I was proud of the way they responded and made big plays when we needed it.”

Jack Nail ran for touchdowns of 20 and 45 yards as the Cubs built a 14-6 lead. Zane Green ran for the conversion on the first TD.

Nail threw a 30-yard TD pass to Sam Vickers to set up the winning PAT.

“Defensively, we shut down their runs,” Peacock said. “They threw the ball well overall and tested our secondary.”
