The Albany Lady Lions volleyball team enjoyed another 2-0 week in District 6-2A play last week as they moved closer to the start of the playoffs.

The Lady Lions (27-3 overall) have won 13 consecutive matches, including Tuesday night’s win.

The Lady Lions defeated Newcastle on Tuesday, winning in three sets 25-17, 25-16, 25-14. Details will be reported next week. 

The team has an open date on Saturday.

Albany started the week Oct. 5 with a 25-12, 25-9, 25-6 victory over Abilene TLC. On Saturday, Albany defeated Moran 25-7, 25-5, 25-16.

“We are using these matches to prepare our offense for our last (2A) district game against Hawley and then for the playoffs,” Lady Lions coach M.J. Reneau said. “We are throwing in new plays and starting to peak as a team. I’m excited about what is coming next.”

Against TLC, Albany served 29 aces in the match.

On Saturday, the Lady Lions used a pair of six-point service runs and a five-point run to overcome an early deficit in the first set. In the second set, Robin Lucas served the first 20 points as Albany led from the start.

Albany took the lead for good in the third set at 17-16 and Tristen Brown served out the last eight points.

Junior Varsity

The Lady Lions JV2 team defeated Knox City 25-9, 25-14 on Oct. 5 and improved to 4-11.

“This was a great win for our JV2,” coach Jamie Wilson said. “They did a fantastic job of adjusting to the new rotation we threw together. Our passing was good throughout the game.”

The junior varsity teams are off until Tuesday, Oct. 19, when they host Hawley. 

On Oct. 23, JV1 will play at Rising Star, while JV2 joins the varsity in hosting Hico.
