Two Shackelford County youth exhibitors participated at the West Texas Fair and Rodeo in Abilene last weekend with junior heifers.

Myleigh Leveridge took home third place with her black maintainer heifer, and fifth place with her shorthorn plus heifer.

Gracie Price placed sixth with her class one other regular breed, and claimed seventh place with her Charolais heifer class six.

FFA advisor Chris Beard said that Shackelford County youth will show steers and swine next weekend.

He explained that this year’s fair has been spread out over three weeks due to the pandemic.

“It appears that there are actually more competitors this year than normal,” Beard said. “I think people want to get out and be a part of something.”

He added that everything has fallen into place despite extra precautions, and once exhibitors get in the barn, the show seems to run like it has in previous years.

“Some people wear masks, and some do not,” Beard explained. “Masks are not new to stock shows. Many people wear them because of allergies.”

The WTF&R started Friday, Sept. 4 and will run until Saturday, Sept. 19, with both steers and swine shows taking place on Sept. 19.
