This weekend, on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 1:00 p.m., the Shackelford County Youth & Livestock Association members will host the 34th Annual First Impressions Invitational Pig Sale at the county show barn.

Organizers are expecting 16 consignors from four states to bring 100 pigs for the competition and sale.

Local 4-H and FFA members and their families started working two weeks ago to insure that the facilities are clean and ready for the annual pig sale.

“We started cleaning two weeks ago since the stock show season started a week earlier than normal with the West Texas Fair and Rodeo trying to space out events,” said Chris Beard, Albany ag instructor.

Local exhibitors will help during the sale and clean up after the event.

“We try to get as many youth involved as possible, because the pig sale is a fundraiser for the benefit of those participating in the local stock show,” Beard said.

Pigs to be sold at the sale will be received and tagged on Saturday, Sept. 12.

On Sunday morning, the pigs will be judged to select the entries for the breed champions, and the grand and reserve champions overall.

EZ Feed and Supply in Albany and Linders Feed in Comfort are sponsoring the prize money and show ribbons.

Judges for the event will be Nolan County Agent Zack Wilcox and Brad Bevel from the Stamford FFA.

Selection of the grand and reserve champions is scheduled to take place at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, Sept 13.

The grand champion barrow will win $1,000, and $500 will go to the reserve champion barrow. Prize money for the grand and reserve champion gilt is $750 and $250 respectively.
