Several community activities are being organized in Moran this spring, offering various opportunities for locals spend time with old friends and cultivate new ones.

Community Garden

A community garden is being organized by Karen Bishop and Teresa King.

“Everybody in town is invited to participate,” said Bishop. “This is for everyone who is willing to put in some effort. I am hoping to get the community working together on the garden.”

According to Bishop, this is not a city project, but is being organized by private individuals and will be located on privately owned land.

“There are many ways people can join in and participate,” Bishop said. “They can donate plants or seeds, till the ground, set out rows, plant, or weed the garden. Our idea is to have one garden, with everyone who contributes to it getting to enjoy the produce.”

The garden will be located inside the city limits, on the corner of Putnam Road and Woodrow Avenue. Up to a 50 by 100 foot area is available for the garden, depending upon the level of interest.

“We plan to rototill in the near future,” Bishop said. “We intend to have some raised beds and also some tilled flat (traditional) garden area.”

For more information, or to take part in the community garden, call Bishop at 325-762-0643 or King at 254-661-0088.

“The sooner we get started, the sooner we will be able to enjoy the fruits of our labor,” said Bishop. “Come and join us!”

Bake Sale

The Moran First Baptist Church is sponsoring a bake sale at 317 Waters Street (His and Her Hair Styling) on Saturday, March 7 from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon.

Proceeds from the event will be used to help purchase and install a new lift chair for the church.

To donate, call Cynthia Gilmore at 325-518-4557.

D.A.’s Fundraiser

Donnie Edgar and Allen Mosher are holding a fundraiser meal for Dyrik Webster at D.A.’s this Saturday, March 7 at 4:00 p.m.

D.A.’s is located at 111 Ground Street in Moran.

Webster, a student at Moran, is the 12-year-old son of Shelly Alexander.

According to Edgar, Webster has medical issues that severely limit what he can eat.

“He is on a special diet, and it is getting kind of expensive,” said Edgar.

Everyone is invited to the $10 a plate dinner. The menu will be brisket, beans, and potato salad.

“We’ll be serving food until either we run out, or people stop coming in,” said Edgar. “We’ve been fixing more food each time, and we’ve still been running out.”

Mosher and Edgar have held fundraisers for several individuals including Gabe Boyett, Cindy Carroll, and Baylee Orsak.

“We’re trying to do this once a month,” said Edgar. “We are hoping to do this for anyone who needs help, not just those in Moran.”

Musical Fundraiser

The Moran Volunteer Fire Department and the city park benefitted from another recent fundraiser, the Moran musical.

Organizer Marty Clifford raised $65 for the VFD and $25 for the city park at the Feb. 22 community event.

Mayor and fire chief Steve Taggart expressed his appreciation.

“Thanks to Marty, for having the musical come back to Moran,” said Taggart. “I remember it from when I was a kid, and I’m glad it’s back. Also, thanks for donating the money to the Moran city fire department and Moran city park.”

Ladies Paint Night

Christal Herrell and Michelle Taggart are holding a “Ladies Paint Night” at the Moran Community Center at 6:00 p.m. next Saturday, March 14.

There is a $10 per person charge. Paints and canvases will be provided, and participants are also invited to bring a pair of canvas shoes and “try something new.”
